More Families Seeking Food Assistance (see video)

By: Amanda O'Neal, North Texas Food Bank Public Relations Manager

Like many North Texans, Pam Polk recently took a long, hard look at her finances and realized she didn't quite have enough to make ends meet. Pam not only had to think about herself, but also her two daughters- 9 year old Alexis and 14 year old Diamond. Pam held down a full time job at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Dallas and was able to provide a comfortable life for her family until the price of gas and food soared to record highs. That compounded with medical bills for Alexis, a mortgage, high utility bills and car trouble left Pam needing assistance to help put food on the table.

Pam called 2-1-1 to find help and was connected with the Cedar Hill Food Pantry, which recently won a Model Agency award from the North Texas Food Bank. She qualified to receive groceries from the pantry which she says was a tremendous relief. This is the first time Pam had to seek help to ensure her daughters would be fed. She encourages other single mothers to keep their head up and always have faith their situation will get better.

Diamond and Alexis are bright and ambitious young ladies and finished the school year on the A and A/B honor roll. Pam is very proud of her girls and wants them to continue on the right path and go to college. Diamond was accepted into the prestigious Townview Business and Management magnet school and wants to be a business owner one day. Unfortunately with money being so tight, the girls have had to cut back on extracurricular activities and won't be able to attend summer camps if there is a fee. However, the Polk family remains positive and has comfort in knowing that they will have nutritious meals to eat thanks to the Cedar Hill Food Pantry and the North Texas Food Bank.

Summer is the hungriest time of year. That's when children are out of school, more meals are prepared at home and school breakfast and lunch programs aren't available.

Thank you for everything you're doing and for giving people a hand when they really need it. Because of your gifts, parents like Pam don't have to choose between paying the bills and providing food for their children. Every dollar donated provides five meals for needy families. Thank you for caring about our neighbors in need!

Please volunteer or donate.
